The Role

The Editorial Intern is responsible for providing support for the editorial/writing team and the marketing team in producing stories, marketing collaterals, and general tasks as required. The Editorial Intern will report to the Assistant Editor for the duration of the internship (3 to 6 months), and must be based in Singapore.

Kontinentalist is a data storytelling studio and web publication committed to growing Asia’s voice in global conversations. Our award-winning digital stories blend data visualisation, narrative, design, and code, helping our clients and non-profit partners communicate data in engaging and memorable ways. Passionate about empowering Asia’s data storytellers and helping them find belonging with one another, we create educational content (workshops, talks, social media) as well as opportunities and supportive communities for data storytelling professionals and enthusiasts in the region.

Responsibilities

  • Assist writers with researching and data work as requested, including but not restricted to data collection, data cleaning, data analysis, and data visualisation.
  • Contribute ideas and feedback to editorial and marketing discussions.
  • Help conceptualise and develop marketing campaigns for Kontinentalist’s stories and brand.
  • Conduct digital and social media marketing research and perform routine marketing functions, such as search engine optimisation, copywriting, and marketing analytics.
  • Other projects as assigned.
  • Interns may plan and pitch a story idea for the Kontinentalist platform before the end of their internship. If the story is approved, the intern may conceptualise, plan, research, and write an article for our publication.

  • Excellent communication and organisational skills, as well as comfort with working with supervisors to manage multiple priorities
  • Strong initiative and ability to work and learn independently
  • Deep desire for learning and a can-do attitude, coupled with open-mindedness and a willingness to offer and receive criticism
  • Collaborative team player eager to assist with and elevate the quality of Kontinentalist’s work
  • Sensitivity to language, especially around complex ideas written for casual readers
  • Basic design skills and competency at data analysis, visualisation, or storytelling (preferred but not mandatory)
