Kontinentalist is hiring a General Manager to lead the company in achieving its short and long-term editorial and revenue goals. We’re looking for individuals who have a strong passion and belief in the need for Asian representation and data storytelling in the media landscape. While we seek candidates with management experience, we want a leader who is empathic, consultative, open-minded, and prioritises process over outcome.

About Kontinentalist

Kontinentalist is a data storytelling studio and web publication committed to growing Asia’s voice in global conversations. Our award-winning digital stories blend data visualisation, narrative, design, and code, helping our clients and non-profit partners communicate data in engaging and memorable ways. Passionate about empowering Asia’s data storytellers and helping them find belonging with one another, we create educational content (workshops, talks, social media) as well as opportunities and supportive communities for data storytelling professionals and enthusiasts in the region.

Responsibilities

The General Manager’s core responsibilities are in ensuring that the day-to-day operations of the company run smoothly, and both short- and long-term plans are executed. In Kontinentalist, these responsibilities will be to look after three core areas. 

 

Outreach & Partnerships

A core part of Kontinentalist’s modus operandi is to collaborate and work with cause-driven organisations and individuals. You will need to:

  • Work with the Marketing and Outreach team to strategise, and plan outreach initiatives, such as events and talks. 
  • Collaborate with various departments in the company to plan and prioritise strategic and mission-achieving partnerships for the company. 

 

Financial Planning

The General Manager will be responsible for managing the company’s overall budget and finances, in consultation with the company’s founders and parent group, Potato Productions. These include:

  • Oversee the company’s annual budget, including making recommendations on costs and expenses, and executing the budget. 
  • Ensuring that teams and employees adhere to the company’s budget and priorities.

 

Products & Revenue

Kontinentalist does not make revenue from its publication and therefore has to seek revenue from other sources. These include bespoke projects, consultation, workshops, and a content management system. You will need to:

  • Oversee the company’s overall client strategy and management, including liaising with clients to understand their needs and limitations, keeping an eye on timelines, setting rates and prices. 
  • Collaborate with individuals across various teams to deliver results and items to clients. 
  • Work with the product development team to plan and execute product strategy and implementation. These include workshops, consultation, and a content management system. 

The Kontinentalist team is relatively small and all its members wear multiple hats across different projects and sub-teams, and work independently. But the General Manager will still need to work closely with everyone to deconflict competing timelines, and help team members prioritise what’s more important.

What we look out for

We’re not looking for someone who can simply execute and carry out the company’s operations. The candidate must have vision and drive to help take the company to greater heights. 

 

Job experience

Our ideal candidate should have the following job experience. They should have:

  • Worked at least four to five years, with at least two or three years of experience in managing a team or sub-team. 
  • Experience working in a content production or media company, preferably a digital publication. 
  • Experience working with or in a business function or strategy, preferably in planning revenue streams and overseeing budgets.

 

Core competencies

Because Kontinentalist is a data-driven studio, we’re looking for candidates with some knowledge or experience in:

  • Basic data visualisation and analysis skills 
  • Some experience with data visualisation tools or programmes
  • Editorial knowledge and experience
  • Strong general knowledge and a pulse on current affairs, especially concerning Asia
  • Interpersonal and networking skills 
  • Knowledge and understanding of product thinking culture and principles
  • Ability to speak the language around design and development
