We are looking for a graphics storyteller to support our company’s new mission and vision. The graphics storyteller will also participate designing editorially ready static or interactive data visualisations or illustrations for our clients and partners, or for events and community activities, at a lesser frequency. The graphics storyteller will sit within the company’s Experiment and Research team. The Graphics Storyteller will report to Editorial Lead, and should preferably be based in Singapore.

About Kontinentalist

Kontinentalist is a data storytelling studio and web publication committed to growing Asia’s voice in global conversations. Our award-winning digital stories blend data visualisation, narrative, design, and code, helping our clients and non-profit partners communicate data in engaging and memorable ways. Passionate about empowering Asia’s data storytellers and helping them find belonging with one another, we create educational content (workshops, talks, social media) as well as opportunities and supportive communities for data storytelling professionals and enthusiasts in the region.

Responsibilities

  • Support the editorial workflow and calendar through pitching, sourcing, narrative and visual outlining, research, illustrations, design, coding and possibly writing to produce longform or micro data stories regularly for Kontinentalist's web publication, with a minimum publication rhythm of 6 pieces yearly.
  • Produce graphics and visuals with accuracy, accessibility, and platform context in mind — designing for Kontinentalist's web, social, and other publication surfaces, and ensuring work is legible across audiences including those with colour vision differences.
  • Collaborate frequently with other team members or freelancers, including writers, researchers, topic experts, designers, illustrators, developers, editors and so on in the production of stories.
  • Support data analysis, visualisation ideation and design, illustrations, workshopping, and development of data and story insights on projects, including sourcing, cleaning and fact-checking data, and selecting appropriate visual formats to communicate findings accurately and without misrepresentation.
  • Contribute ideas and feedback to editorial discussion across all assigned projects, and manage the company's editorial meetings.
  • Other projects as assigned.

What we look out for

  • Up to two years of working experience in creating data stories through a visual-led approach, regardless of publication platform or place. Proven ability in this is important with a portfolio (college or personal projects included).
  • Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator or equivalent vector design tools for building explanatory graphics, diagrams, and visual layouts. A good eye for typography, hierarchy, and composition, especially as it applies to data storytelling rather than decorative design.
  • Proficiency and confidence around data, specifically with data cleaning, analysis, and use of visualisation tools. Familiarity with tools such as visualisation tools such as Datawrapper, Flourish, or RAWGraphs for charting, and QGIS or Mapbox for cartography and geospatial work, is a strong advantage.
  • Some experience or interest in editorial illustration, with cultural sensitivity and contextual awareness for Asian subjects and audiences. Ability to concept and execute visuals that serve the story rather than decorate it.
  • Familiarity with communicating for multiple publication surfaces, web, social, and others, with an understanding of accessibility considerations such as colour contrast and legibility across audiences.
  • Familiarity with working in highly collaborative environments, especially with colleagues from significantly different skillsets.
  • Strong initiative and ability to work and learn independently, and stay disciplined to set deadlines.
  • Deep desire for learning and a can-do attitude, coupled with open-mindedness and a willingness to offer and receive criticism.
  • Knowledge or interest in decolonial and feminist methodologies and frameworks, and how to put them into practice. Not a must, but nice to have.
  • A good understanding of the state of current affairs in the Asian region, especially with regards to topics concerning tech, climate change, social justice, infrastructural developments, and so on.
